  • Patients' rights in India: an ethical perspective

    Patient autonomy is affected by a number of factors, including severity of illness, socio-economic status and dependence. Many patients find that they are not treated with due consideration and compassion, and also have no control over their own care. In this article, we consider whether the Code of Ethics Regulations of the Medical Council of India protects patients’ rights, by comparing the code with the charter of patients’ rights of the Consumer Guidance Society of India. We then look at other developments in protecting patients’ rights and the need for further work in this area.
